SOUTH Tyneside super swimmer Josef Craig has been given a training boost as he sets his sights on Rio.
Charles Buchanan, director of Easy Fitness, which runs Fit4less gyms, has made the teenager – who is the current S7 400m freestyle world record holder, world champion and Paralympic champion – an honorary member of his gym in Ellison Street, Jarrow.
It means the 16-year-old has an additional place in which he can train when he’s not in the pool.
Mr Buchanan said: “Josef has achieved a phenomenal amount since last year’s Paralympic Games, and with him being a local lad I wanted to give him an honorary membership to the gym.
“We have state-of-the art facilities here and it was something we wanted to do for him. He’s always had the support of his mam, so we thought it would be a nice gesture to make her an honorary member too.”
When not training in the pool, Josef attends the AIS gym in Gateshead.
However, the 16-year-old says having facilities so close to his home in Swinbourne Terrace, Jarrow, will make attending the gym a lot easier.
He said: “I’m just delighted they have made me an honorary member.
It’s an amazing gym. I’ve been in and had a look around and it’s just outstanding.
“ Coming here its going to make training so much easier, as it being so close means I can come when I want.”
The gym is based on the first floor of the recently renamed and relaunched Jarrow Buffs club.
