South Tyneside mum's fury over plastic found in food

Tracey Douglas bought the £5 bag of prawns, mussels and squid from Iceland as part of her efforts to keep her diet healthy.

She was taken aback when the piece of plastic bounced onto the kitchen work top of her home in Quarry Lane, South Shields.

The 45-year-old, who is mum to Joshua Bush, 16, and Oliver Bush, 14, who are students of Harton Technology College, fears others could be at risk if foreign objects are making it into the bags.

She has alerted Iceland after buying the bag of Arctic Royal Premium Seafoods from its store in Prince Edward Road, South Shields, to use in salads and eat as a snack.

The firm has now promised an investgation.

Tracey said: “I was just going to defrost some and was edging some out into a container when I saw this black lid fall onto the bench.

“I looked at it and it looks like it’s come from the lid of a thick black felt tip pen.

“It’s quite a size.

“I was shocked. I just thought about what would have happened if I hadn’t noticed.

“With all the different bits in the mix, it would have been difficult to pick out.

“Oliver really likes seafood and I wonder what would have happened if he’d eaten it.

“If someone small had swallowed it, it could have got stuck in their throat.

“I don’t want any money, I just don’t want this to happen to anyone else.”

A spokesman for Iceland said: “Please be assured that we take all complaints extremely seriously. We can confirm that Ms Douglas has been in touch with our customer care department regarding the foreign body.

“We have arranged for the item to be collected in order for our supplier to carry out a thorough investigation. As soon as we have the results of this investigation we will get back in touch with Ms Douglas.”
