A BIG-hearted beauty queen from South Tyneside is hoping Gazette readers can help her lift a national crown.
Shannen Steinson, of Cloister Walk in Jarrow, is the reigning Miss Newcastle.
On Monday, the 19-year-old will be at Kelham Hall in Nottingham to take part in the semi-finals of this year’s Miss England contest.
Votes are already being cast by text message, and they could ensure she makes it through to the final, to be staged in Torquay in Devon in June.
All texts cost £1, with a proportion of the proceeds going to the Beauty with a Purpose charity, set up to support disabled, disadvantaged and sick children.
Shannen has already staged coffee mornings and wine-and-onesie parties in support of the charity, and she has also been out on the streets collecting cash.
Fundraising is nothing new for the former Jarrow School pupil.
Last year, she took part in the annual Christmas party organised by the People’s Kitchen beneath the railway arches in Trafalgar Street, Newcastle.
The event helped boost the spirits of more than 200 homeless and vulnerable people living on the streets of the city.
The teenager, an entrant for the Gazette’s Face of 2011 contest and also a former model for South Tyneside clothing company Barbour, doled out food to the homeless at the party.
Her mum Susan, 37, said: “She’s nervous and excited but looking forward to the semi-final and representing the region.
“I’d urge everyone to vote for her to guarantee she reaches the final. She’s currently third out of 60 in the text poll, so we’re very hopeful she’ll reach the final.”
To vote, text 64343 and type in MISS SEMI55.
