Dean Elliott, 26, spent two years pursuing the young girl and "took every opportunity" he had to make sexual advances towards her, Newcastle Crown Court heard.

He was found guilty after trial of a string of sex charges relating to the girl.

Elliott, of Newlyn Drive, Jarrow, first abused her by "groping her backside".

Judge, Recorder Simon Jackson, told how Elliott then "took every opportunity after that point" to sexually abuse her.

Recorder Jackson told of another occasion when he assaulted the girl while someone else was present.

He said: "On at least two occasions you recorded your offences and on at least two occasions others were present, which obviously has caused her great harm and distress."

The recorder told the court that on at least two occasions he had given the victim alcohol in order to make his offending easier and that she would often wake up to being sexually assaulted.

Elliott denied carrying out the offences which were four counts of sexual activity with a child under 13, two counts of rape of a child under 13 and one count of rape of a woman between 13 and 15.

He instead said that the victim was "making it up", but was found guilty after trial at Newcastle Crown Court.

Recorder Simon Jackson said the victim claimed to have "experienced flash backs from her ordeal".

He said: "She was forced to relive what you had done to her by you pleading not guilty and making her give evidence.

"Like with any victim of sexual assault, these offences have had a massive detrimental effect on that young girl."

Elliott showed no emotion as the judge jailed him for 14 years with one year on licence after release.
