BRITISH Telecom is set to give a boost to South Tyneside by creating more than 50 new jobs in the borough.
BT South Tyneside is advertising the posts at its offices in Rolling Mill Road, Jarrow.
The full-time roles will primarily be in the finance, human resources and payroll departments, which deliver services to a range of local government customers.
The recruitment drive will expand BT’s involvement in South Tyneside.
It already has a strategic partnership with South Tyneside Council and employs 350 staff at its Hawthorne Building in Jarrow, with a further 221 people employed in the borough – mainly at its Harton Quay building.
Coun Michael Clare, lead member for regeneration and economy at South Tyneside Council, said: “This is great news for local jobseekers and for the people of South Tyneside, especially during such economically challenging times.
“It is an excellent opportunity for local people who would like a career with the BT team and we would urge them to apply.
“Creating more job opportunities is a key priority for the council, as we work with our partners to reduce unemployment levels and create the right conditions for business growth and investment across the borough.
“Our BT South Tyneside partnership has been a real success story in helping us to achieve this.
“We would like to thank BT for its continued commitment to the borough.”
John Tyreman, BT’s head of shared services, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for individuals to join a new, locally-based team, which they can actively help to shape and develop from day one.
“There will be real opportunities for career progression, and many other benefits that go hand-in-hand with working for an organisation of BT’s size.
“We are looking for driven, enthusiastic people, with experience of working in finance, human resources and payroll, who are looking for new challenges and are absolutely committed to providing top-class customer service.”
Job descriptions and details of how to apply can be found on South Tyneside Council’s website, www.southtyneside.info/jobs.
The closing date for applications is Monday, December 16.
Interviews will commence in early January.
BT is also inviting people interested in the jobs to visit South Shields Town Hall on December 12 between 11.30am and 7pm to get more information in an informal setting.
There will be opportunities to meet BT staff already working in similar roles, who can share their experiences and answer questions.
