Karate kids kick off the year in style

Karate kids from South Tyneside have wasted no time getting to grips with winning medals.

The Dokan club kicked off the competitive year in style by topping the medal table at the English Kyu grade National Championships and have have not stopped winning since.

Their next outing was the Yorkshire open in February where they entered a huge squad of around 50 students and finished top club of the 40.

Earlier this montjh, a small elite squad flew out to Sweden to take part in the Swedish International tournament where they yet again turned on the style to win six gold medals, four silver and six bronze.

Chief instructor, Kevan Mitchinson, said: “In this standard of tournament this is a fantastic result from only eleven Dokan student

“Last year was immensely successful and the aim was to continue in the same style this year.

“They have certainly done that”

There was little time for rest as the squad were back in action on March 12 at the Chojinkai Competition in Penrith.

A squad of 45 returned to South Tyneside with 22 gold, 34 silver and 27 bronze medals.

Mr Mitchinson added: “83 medals was a greaty return for their efforts.

The youngsters are now preparing for The English Nationals Championships in April.
