A NEW businesswoman is taking her first bite of self-employment in South Tyneside.
Kerry Walker, 33, has just launched Kerry’s Kitchen, based at Tedco Business Centre, Jarrow.
Selling a wide range of hot and cold food, including sandwiches, Miss Walker decided to launch her first business after she had worked in a call centre.
She said: “It was time for a change, as I’d worked in the call centre for seven years.
“Before that, I was the manager of a Card Warehouse shop, but was made redundant, which forced me into the call centre job.
“But I’d always dreamed of starting my own business and finally decided to take the plunge after the unit in Jarrow became available.
“I’ve invested about £5,500 of my own money in starting Kerry’s Kitchen, but I’ve had fabulous support from the staff at Tedco in Jarrow.”
After taking on assistant Melanie Spinks, she aims to develop and grow the business and hopefully recruit more workers.
Miss Walker, of Biddick Hall, South Shields, added: “At the moment, we serve breakfasts and daily specials, and a wide range of cold and hot sandwiches, soups and salads.
“But we also make deliveries and are hoping to do more outside catering as well.”
Although no grants were available when launching her new catering venture, Miss Walker said she would encourage others to try self-employment.
“We’ve just opened, but business is good so far and I’m glad I made the leap and started my own business,” she added.
Kerry’s Kitchen, based at unit 204, Tedco Business Centre, Viking Industrial Park, Jarrow, is open Monday to Friday, between 8.30am and 3pm.
