NEWCASTLE United players past and present have paid tribute to the two supporters who lost their lives when the Malaysia Airlines plane they were on crashed over Ukraine.
Magpies supporters John ‘The Undertaker’ Alder, from Gateshead, and Liam Sweeney, from Newcastle, were on their way to New Zealand for Newcastle’s pre-season tour when tragedy struck.
They were among the 298 passengers and crew killed on board the flight, which was heading from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur.
Newcastle’s Dutch goalkeeper Tim Krul was among those to pay his respects on Twitter.
He said: “2 Geordies on plane MH17 travelling to watch Nufc in New Zealand. RIP John Adler and Liam Sweeney.. Our thoughts are with all the families!”
Former Newcastle goalkeeper Steve Harper added: “Awful news about the two Newcastle fans on the Malaysian flight that came down. Thoughts go out to their families & friends.”
Ex-Magpies striker Mick Quinn, meanwhile, said: “Sad to hear about the 2 Newcastle fans who were on flight MH 17. R.I.P John and Liam.”
