South Tynesiders can learn more about the people bidding to be the region’s crime chief before having their say at the polls.

By visiting www.choosemypcc.org.uk and entering a postcode, electors can read and download the full political statements for the four Northumbria candidates, including Vera Baird, hoping to be re-elected to the role.

The deadline for candidate nominations closed on April and anyone not yet registered to vote has until today to sign up.

This is the second time that voters in the borough and the wider Northumbria Police force area have gone to the polls for a commissioner.

The first commissioner election was held in November 2012.

There are 1,035,492 registered electors in the Northumbria Police Area, including 323,155 postal voters. Polling Day is Thursday, May 5, and the result will be announced the next day.
