LENNOX the boxer dog has knocked out the rest of the competition to become the Gazette’s Star Pet.

The five-month-old pooch, named after former world heavyweight champion boxer Lennox Lewis, stormed to the top spot after readers struggled to resist his cute wrinkly face and puppy-dog eyes.

His owner, Aaron Elgar, of Tasmania Road, South Shields, has had Lennox since he was just eight weeks old.

The 23-year-old factory worker said: “He was tiny, but he’s getting big now.

“I had a sheepdog-spaniel cross called Bobby for 17 years, and it upset me when he died. It took me a long while to get another dog, but I thought the time was right. Lennox is brilliant, and he’s absolutely nuts – he’s daft as a brush. He’s either full of life or he’s fast asleep – there’s no in-between with him.”

Aaron got a shock when he saw the picture of his pet in the paper, as it was his girlfriend, Bethany Thomas, who sent the picture in.

He said: “She told me to look in the paper and there he was. I couldn’t believe it. I can believe that he’s won though, because he was the best looking by far.”

Aaron has won £25 of vouchers to spend on his prize pooch.

He added: “He’s already been spoilt rotten – I’ve spent £100 on him for Christmas. I’ve bought him a memory foam bed and loads of treats. He’s worth it. Everyone fusses over him, but he deserves it.”
