£1,000 donation a big help to ME group

A GENEROUS donation has been made to a South Tyneside charity.

A cheque for 1,000 was given to the Sunderland and South Tyneside ME/CFS Support Group by Northern Gas Networks (NGN).

The group gives help and support to people with ME (Myalgic Encephalomyelitis), also known as CFS (Chronic Fatigue Syndrome).

The money was raised by NGN's Corporate Social Responsibility programme, which gives cash to charities and communities in need.

Honorary treasurer Pauline Donaldson said they were very grateful for the money.

She added: "It is a huge amount of money. Our services are as in need as ever, as ME/CFS is an ongoing thing.

"We help sufferers come to terms with the condition. It's really about managing the illness and learning to live with it."

ME/CFS affects around 250,000 people in the UK.

There is no diagnostic test or cure for the condition, which can leave sufferers so incapacitated they cannot work or even leave the house.

Mrs Donaldson said the money would be used to buy new publicity material and provide complementary therapy, such as massage and aromatherapy, to group members.

"We want to make sufferers feel better about themselves and this therapy is more of a feel-good factor," she said.

The Sunderland and South Tyneside ME/CFS Support Group was set up in 1987 and has 200 members.

Over the years it has helped many more ME/CFS sufferers, including non-members, and is staffed by volunteers.

The group offers free membership, monthly meetings, a dedicated helpline, a quarterly newsletter and a website.

Anyone wanting more information on the group's work or who suffers from ME/CFS and needs advice, call 455 6959 or visit www.mecfs.co.uk.
