£10 jab could be a lifesaver!

A SOUTH Tyneside superstore will offer flu jabs for £10.

The move comes after a health chief has urged people not to underestimate the dangers of flu.

Professor David Salisbury, who is in charge of vaccinations in England, is urging South Tynesiders to get a flu jab before the winter takes hold, as it could "literally be a lifesaver".

And Asda Boldon is one of the chain's 150 stores in England which will offer the vaccination in early next month for 10.

In partnership with Doctorcall, the UK's leading mobile medical service, Asda is now taking bookings for the vaccinations which will see trained nurses in 152 stores on Saturday, November 8, between 10am and 6pm.

Professor Salisbury, the director of immunisation for the Department of Health, is concerned that people do not know the full extent of the virus, after a survey of more than 1,000 people found that a third of them thought flu was the same as a heavy cold.

He said: "The research shows that common colds are frequently confused with flu, but for some, the flu virus can potentially be life-threatening.

"We are urging those at greater risk – including people suffering serious heart problems, asthma and diabetes – to get their flu jab. The flu jab can save lives."

The advice was backed by Diabetes UK, Asthma UK and the British Heart Foundation (BHF), which stressed complications could be serious, or even fatal.

Because strains of flu viruses change every year, vulnerable people need to be vaccinated every 12 months.

The vaccine is available free to older people, and those with chronic conditions including heart disease, asthma and diabetes.

Professor Salisbury, said that last year, fewer than half of eligible people under 65 took advantage of the jab.

The survey found that one in three people said vitamin C could cure it, despite no evidence this is the case.

Asda superintendent pharmacist John Evans said: "We're looking forward to the vaccination session in November, and offering great value at just 10."

To book the vaccination, call Asda Boldon on 536 6300.
