A TOWN improvement scheme is set to be launched after the green light was given to a £1m Lotto project in South Tyneside.
The Big Local will provide a boost to the quality and fabric of life in central Jarrow.
Backed by the Big Lottery Fund, approval has just been given for several schemes, including a landscaping and garden project.
Big Local representative Linda Clark said: “After an assessment visit from the local trust on March 12, the partnership board have just been informed that Big Local – Central Jarrow has had its delivery plan endorsed.
“This means that the £1m can begin to be drawn down.
“The first year’s plan will begin in reality now, with a worker beginning within the month.
“The first tender has gone out for the landscaping and gardening project, the second for a healthy living network will be advertised within a month, and the detached young people’s project advertised in June.”
A scheme partnership board meeting at Epinay School, Jarrow, was told that members’ time and commitment to Big Local has really paid off, with £1m now formally allocated to central Jarrow.
Five local community grants have also been approved as part of Big Local in the town.
Mrs Clark added: “This is a major success for all those involved, and hopefully the £1m will only be the beginning, as this work may also be able to lever in more funding for the area.”
People in the town have been consulted about how they would like to see the £1m Lotto windfall spent.
The Big Local board is working with other groups and partners, including Groundwork South Tyneside and Newcastle, to make the improvement schemes a reality in central Jarrow.
