Abi's mission to Montserrat

A GIRL Guide is taking a trip to a tiny Caribbean island to help rebuild lives shattered by a devastating volcano.

Abigail Green, 18, from South Shields, will travel to Montserrat in the summer with five other girls from across the region.

The girls will be launching the Girlguiding UK peer education initiative 4 after volunteering to travel to the island.

In 1995, the Soufriere Hills volcano erupted, covering the majority of the island in ash, killing 20 people and affecting thousands.

Today, Montserrat's people are still struggling to rebuild their lives.

The St Joseph's RC Comprehensive A-level student said: "Inhabitants of the island live knowing that the volcano could erupt at any time, but are rebuilding their lives. This is where we will help out.

"I've studied the island in geography lessons and I thought this was the ideal opportunity to experience it. After looking at the island and seeing the devastation, I thought I'd like to help out.

"It will give me a chance to pick up skills I will need for life. I also want to get into geography when I leave school, and I thought this would be a good experience."

Abigail, from Mowbray Road, Westoe, will travel to Montserrat in July. The initiative 4 – 4self, 4wards, 4others – was set up to educate young people on current issues.

Abigail added: "We'll be training other young people how to teach each other on the topics of bullying and sexual health."

But to make the trip happen Abigail needs to raise 1,400.

She added: "I would appreciate any help and support. I have set up a web page where people can donate online.

"I've already raised about 150, but I need a lot of help.

"I hope friends, family and maybe some local businesses will be able to help me out."
