Actress Mel recalls her first love

A TOP North-East actress has recalled her first love – and how she promptly scared him off – ahead of a new production coming to South Shields next month.

Mel Hill, who has previously appeared in TV shows such as Bread, The Bill, EastEnders and Auf Wiedersehen Pet, as well as the film Stardust, was talking in support of the upcoming comedy Good To Firm at The Customs House.

Set against the backdrop of the Grand National, the story depicts the weight of that burgeoning first love between its protagonists, married Bob and his childhood sweetheart and long-time friend Phillippa.

It asks the question of whether first love ever dies.

And speaking ahead of the production, Mel has revisited the past to tell the embarrassing episode of her forays into love.

She said: "My first love was a young man by the name of Steven Gow.

"I fancied him with a vengeance for the entire fifth form at Monkwearmouth Comprehensive, and when he finally asked me out, I was beside myself with nerves.

"We went down to Seaburn beach and walked along to Whitburn – I remember him turning up in a 'smashing new leather mac' as I later recorded in my diary.

"We sat on the grass and I nonchalantly threw my head back, showing off for all I was worth, and put my palm 'splat' in an extremely large smelly pile of dog mess.

"Needless to say, it was the last I saw of the wonderful Steven Gow – young love can be so fickle."

Thankfully, Mel, the former wife of actor Sean Bean, can now laugh at the heartbreaking event.

South Tyneside playwright Ed Waugh, who penned the script alongside Trevor Wood, said: "Mel is a fantastic actress and great fun to be around, so I was delighted when she presented us with her rather unique story of first love."

They worked together last year when Mel took on the role of Susie in Maggie's End in a performance at The Shaw Theatre, London.

* Good To Firm runs from Wednesday, September 8, to Saturday, September 11. Tickets cost 14, 12 with concessions, and can be booked on 454 1234 or www.customshouse.co.uk
