Almost time to trip the light fantastic

COUNCIL chiefs are preparing for the official switch on of a £150,000 light attraction.

After a delay, the Flash@Hebburn art feature will finally start to shine at Hebburn Riverside Park, on Saturday, March 7.

Seven years in the making, the permanent art display will incorporate a series of intricate light sequences, inspired by local industries, such as shipbuilding and electronic technology.

The launch was delayed by one month for the installation of light emitting diodes (LEDs), which form a fundamental part of the project.

Community artist Charles Quick, who has created the piece, said: "We are all very excited about the prospect of unveiling Flash@Hebburn in March to the people of South Tyneside.

"Flash@Hebburn has become a big part of my professional life that I've enjoyed immensely, especially visiting South Tyneside to work alongside people who've embraced the project and taken it to their hearts.

"It has been spellbinding to hear stories dating from the industrial age, through to the present day. This is a very special project for a very special place."

The launch ceremony at Hebburn Riverside Park will start at 5.30pm with music, followed by the official switch-on at 7pm.

Coun Tracey Dixon, lead member for culture and wellbeing at South Tyneside Council, said: "We are privileged to be launching Flash@Hebburn in the coming weeks.

"The project has developed into a landmark project the whole community can be proud of, and will become the final and most spectacular piece in the Art on the Riverside programme.

"We hope people will come out in force and join us to help initiate Flash@Hebburn into the north east's public art scene."

The Hebburn art scheme has been funded by Arts Council England and delivered by South Tyneside Council.
