Archers hit the bullseye with grant bids

A NEW archery club in Hebburn is on target for top-flight success after winning cash support.

Clegwell Archers was recently given a National Lottery Awards for All grant of 7,822, following a 1,000 grant from Hebburn councillors.

The money has helped provide much of the archery equipment for the flourishing club, which meets at Clegwell Community Association, in Mountbatten Avenue, Hebburn.

Keith and Susan Murdock run Clegwell Archers, with the help of treasurer Patrick Scott, and new members are joining up all the time.

Catering for both beginners and more experienced archers, the group has 17 members, and trips to other clubs are being organised.

Mr and Mrs Murdock, chairman and secretary respectively, are now welcoming archers from the age of eight upwards.

"I believe ours is the first archery club in Hebburn, and we're delighted with the way it has taken off.

"The money from the National Lottery and South Tyneside Council has been very useful for setting up the club.

"I have been involved in archery for most of my life and it's good to pass on skills to other people," Mr Murdock added.

The couple's three sons, Brandon, 12, Lee, 14, and James, 17, are also devoted archers.

Mr Murdock added: "As the club develops, our main objective will be to get to the English and Scottish national championships.

"We only compete against ourselves at the minute, as we build up our skills."

Clegwell Archers meet at Clegwell CA between 9am and 3pm every Saturday and Sunday.

There are also facilities for disabled archers.

Contact the centre on 489 7575 or club officials on 077 6012 2293 for more details.
