Art show aims to raise a smile

A SOUTH Shields company looks set to paint a smile on a few faces by sponsoring this year's Newcastle Gateshead Art Fair (NGAF).

Now in its fourth year, the event is the largest of its kind in the North East, and is expected to attract more than 10,000 art enthusiasts when it opens at The Sage Gateshead from October 1 to 3.

As well as a wide range of original work from northern, national and international galleries and artists to peruse, there will also be a vast collection of affordable paintings, sculptures, ceramics, photographs and glasswork to buy.

The emerging artists' showcase will also return, giving the public the opportunity to see the work of up-and-coming producers of art.

Supporting all this is cosmetic dental practice Complete Smile, based in South Shields.

Art collector and Cosmetic Smile clinical director Allen Branley said: "It seemed natural to support the fair, as it's not only a significant driver of the arts economy, but a great platform for promoting the area as a destination venue for visitors.

"I have been collecting art for a number of years, and been lucky enough to travel the world teaching and lecturing to dentists, visiting some of the world's most prestigious galleries along the way."

The practice, which is sponsoring the event for the first time, is displaying contemporary art on loan from the Balman Gallery, Corbridge.

Other supporters of this year's NGAF include the National Lottery through Arts Council England, the Contemporary Art Society, The Sage Gateshead, Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art, and Newcastle City Council.

Andy Balman, the fair's co-director, said: "The NGAF has been evolving each year and makes a significant contribution to the regional economy.

"The fair has consistently attracted leading regional, national and overseas galleries showing a diverse range of contemporary art to an appreciative regional audience."

Weekend tickets cost 5 advance and 6 on door. For more information, visit www.ngartfair.com
