Banglas - Abdur a great ambassador

A SENIOR Bangladeshi has been nominated for a Bangla Achievement Award for helping the community in times of need.

Abdur Rahman, of Salmon Street, South Shields, is a respected figure among other Bangladeshis, having come to Britain in the late 1970s.

He has been nominated for the Judges' Special Award by Lalon Amin, a young community leader and secretary of community group Bangla Awaz.

Mr Amin said: "Mr Rahman, who is one of the most senior Bangladeshis in South Tyneside, is a great ambassador for South Shields.

"Since the late 1970s, Mr Rahman has worked so hard for the Bengali community. He was the founder of the first Arabic classes and was instrumental in helping to open the first mosque.

"Whenever anyone is ill, he is the first to visit. Whenever anyone passes away, he is the first to pay condolence and organise the funeral arrangements.

"Whenever someone gets married, he would be the first to volunteer to help with the arrangements.

"He does all the above without receiving or asking for anything in return. He is a beacon for us."
