Barrie's death means a by-election
A BY-ELECTION has been called following the death of a popular South Tyneside councillor, it was announced today.
People will be invited to cast their votes in the Primrose ward, Jarrow, on Thursday, February 25.
The by-election has been triggered by the death just before Christmas of Coun Barrie Scorer, who represented the ward for Labour for almost 40 years.
Coun Scorer, 63, a former Mayor of South Tyneside, died months after undergoing heart surgery.
Hundreds of people attended his funeral at St Peter's Church, Jarrow, on Christmas Eve.
Wilf Flynn, secretary of Jarrow Constituency Labour Party, said: "Out of respect for Barrie, we didn't particularly want to see a by-election before the normal local elections.
"But this is the democratic process and once someone has triggered a by-election, it has to be held within 35 days."
The other two sitting Labour members in the Primrose ward are Coun Emma Lewell and Coun Jim Perry.
