Bedrock babes on run for autism charity

FLINTSTONES, meet the Flintstones – they're a Great North Running family ... from the town of South Shields, they'll be doing it for charity.

Wilma Flintstone, aka South Tynesider Karen Lunn, will be yabba-dabba-doing the world famous half-marathon on Sunday, September 19, alongside her best friend Betty Rubble – Malain Cornock of Hampshire.

The "Bedrock Babes" will be running to raise money for the National Autistic Society (NAS).

Karen, 48, said: "We've got a couple of friends who say they will run as Fred and Barney, but that remains to be seen."

Karen's target figure was 350, a total she has already achieved by organising a fundraising event at St Peter's Church Hall on Moor Lane East, South Shields, with stalls, tombola and a raffle.

"Wilma" herself was in attendance, and it raised 385.

She added: "The National Autistic Society set the target. If it provides a number for a runner in the Great North Run, it asks that the runner raises 350.

"That's why I held the fundraiser, so the pressure is off. I will probably raise about 500.

"We had a good laugh at the fundraiser. Being silly works. I went running last night and I'm doing a fun run on Monday, the Robin Hood 10K.

"That will be the most I've done so far, but I've been building up. I'm getting there."

Karen was inspired to take on the 13-mile run by her autistic 16 year-old son Christopher.

She said: "He helped out at the church hall. He's fab. He's always happy, always got a smile on his face and charms everyone he meets.

"He goes to the post-11 autistic unit in Jarrow, which is brilliant. We struggled with getting the best provision, but the unit was what he needed.

"The NAS helped us with its befriending scheme, because autistic children don't have the correct social skills. It's been the biggest influence on his and our lives."
