Beginning of the end for Shields eyesore

COMING DOWN... Wouldhave House.

COMING DOWN... Wouldhave House.

HERE is a picture which proves there is no going back for a South Tyneside eyesore.

Sixties-built office block Wouldhave House, in South Shields Market Place, is on its way down.

It may take another two months for the site to be completely cleared.

But the canopy along the front of the building has already been removed.

And demolition has started on the internal courtyard at its rear.

No specific date has yet been set for the main building to be flattened.

The demolition work is seen as a key element in the £100m ‘South Shields 365’ regeneration plan for the town centre.

South Tyneside Council is pressing ahead with plans to build a new central library and arts centre on the Wouldhave site.

A new six-screen cinema would also be built in the town.
