Bob's charity art in wife's memory

A JARROW man's love for his late wife has inspired him to create charity artworks in her memory.

Bob Brabon, 73, was devastated when his wife, Dorothy, 72, died last year, after a long battle with breast cancer.

He still finds its hard to talk about his wife of more than 50 years without tears filling his eyes.

But former shipyard and factory worker Mr Brabon, of The Hollow, Fellgate, Jarrow, now finds some consolation in creating paintings of local scenes, which he is selling to boost the 3m appeal for the planned Maggie's Centre for cancer sufferers, at the Freeman Hospital, Newcastle, where his late wife was treated.

The couple, who had three sons, were married at Jarrow Register Office in 1957 and were inseparable.

Mr Brabon said: "It's very hard to talk about Dorothy, because she was the best, but I would like to raise 1,000 for Maggies, to boost the appeal.

"I'm not a great artist, but I enjoy painting, which I only took up it up after Dorothy suffered a stroke. I raised about 500 for the stroke unit at South Tyneside District Hospital, by helping to sell badges and later started painting.

"So far, I've raised about 400 for Maggie's Centre, which will be built in the grounds of the Freeman Hospital."

Mr Brabon works in acrylics, and his subject matter ranges from historic St Paul's Church in Jarrow to upturned boats at Holy Island.

He says his painting technique has improved since he joined the weekly Age Concern art group at St Hilda's Church, Market Square, South Shields, where he has benefited from the help of volunteer art teacher, Angela Bulman.

"I will paint anything, as long as it raises money for the appeal. I'm selling some at Murray's Club, in Fellgate Avenue, Jarrow, which has been very supportive, but I would like to sell more," Mr Brabon added.

Mr Brabon's colourful, locally-inspired canvases sell for between 20 and 30.
