Bosses honoured for health fight

BOSSES have been honoured for their commitment to improving the health of their workers.

The South Tyneside Workplace Health Alliance hosted a ceremony to champion companies that have made positive changes and introduced initiatives to improve the health of their workforce.

Each business received a certificate, presented by the Mayor of South Tyneside, Coun John Anglin, to mark their dedication to promoting healthier living.

Coun Anglin said: "The council and its partners are working hard to promote healthy lifestyles among people in South Tyneside.

"The Workplace Health Alliance is a great way of doing this, and I am delighted to see that businesses are coming on board.

"By getting involved with the Alliance, these employers have shown that they are committed to improving the health of their staff. They now have certificates in recognition of that commitment.

"Businesses with healthy staff should see reduced sickness levels and improved productivity, and I look forward to seeing the Alliance grow even further."

The Workplace Health Alliance is a partnership between South Tyneside Primary Care Trust (PCT), South Tyneside Council, local businesses and the voluntary sector.

The scheme aims to inform, influence and support health improvement within the workplace.

Through the initiative, businesses can access a wide range of health services and programmes, including diet and exercise support and mini MoTs from the PCT's health trainers, NHS Stop Smoking services and access to exercise equipment.

Tracy Collins, health improvement practitioner at South Tyneside PCT, said: "We work with each business to identify what health services will be the most beneficial for staff.

"It is very promising that so many businesses are realising the benefits of promoting healthy living and offering health improvement services for employees."

Among the businesses involved in the initiative are Phoenix Steel, Cottam Brush, Cell Pack Solutions, Urban River, South Tyneside Homes and All Saints Children's Centre.
