TRANSPORT bosses will today be checking a South Tyneside rail bridge after a lorry crashed into it.
The Gazette was sent this photograph of a lorry wedged under the Metro bridge at High Lane Row, in Hebburn.
It reportedly happened yesterday, when the driver realised his lorry was too high to drive through the bridge, but reversed out and drove off.
Nexus, who operate the Metro system, said they were unaware of the crash and they were concerned that it had not been reported to them.
A spokesman said: “Drivers who are involved in a collision with either the bridge walls or the bridge itself must report it immediately so that safety checks can be carrier out and there are signs with telephone numbers displayed to allow people to do this.
“We are concerned that this incident was not reported at the time but engineers were sent out to check the bridge as soon as we were made aware of it by the Gazette.”
