British champ launches open air ice rink
AN open air ice rink has been launched on Tyneside by British figure skating champion Matthew Parr.
For the ninth year in a row, the rink will be open for more than two months at the Centre for Life in Newcastle city centre.
The 19-year-old from North Shields, currently training with Dundee Ice Skating Club, made a special trip home for yesterday's launch.
He performed part of the competitive routine which he hopes will win him a place at the forthcoming Winter Olympics in Vancouver, Canada.
The rink, which attracted more than 80,000 skaters last year, will open tomorrow, and remain until February.
Entrance is 7.50 for adults, 5.50 for children under 16, and a family ticket costs 19.95.
