A BROKEN-down train sparked commuter chaos in South Tyneside tonight.

Metro and Northern Rail services were disrupted between Pelaw and Brockley Whins from around 5.30pm.

A shuttle Metro service was operating between the two stations but it meant people travelling to stations including Fellgate, Brockley Whins and East Boldon faced major tea-time delays.

Passengers were also advised to try and complete journeys by bus where possible.
