Cable thieves cause Metro misery

METRO commuters faced frustration today after cable thieves struck in South Tyneside.

No trains were running between Jarrow and South Shields from first service this morning.

Engineers were called to Tyne Dock after a report that cable had been stolen in the early hours.

Replacement buses operated from Jarrow to all Metro stations.

Today, a spokesman for Metro operator Nexus apologised for the delays.

He said a 1,000 reward was available for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the culprits.

He added: "We understand how frustrating this is, but we had no alternative but to suspend the service."

The incident is the third time this week that the Metro has suffered delays.

Services between Pelaw and Sunderland were suspended for two hours on Tuesday after a train failure at Seaburn.

Another case of cable theft on the Sunderland line yesterday resulted in delays to services.
