Cargo ship safe after listing peril

LISTING ... the cargo ship Molat off Seaburn, Sunderland, yesterday.

LISTING ... the cargo ship Molat off Seaburn, Sunderland, yesterday.

A SHIP began listing in heavy weather of the North East coast yesterday.

The Croatian cargo ship Molat was sailing from Norrköping, Sweden, to Alexandria, Egypt, when her cargo of wood began to shift and she had to head for the safety of inshore water off Seaburn.

There are 20 crew on board.

The boat, which was listing by around five degrees, was diverted to the UK so its cargo of timber could be secured in port at Sunderland.

A spokeswoman for the Humber coastguard said: “A call was made to coastguard at 9.31am when the vessel was 38 miles east south east of the River Tyne.

“It was carrying timber and the cargo was moving around due to the weather conditions.

“It was directed inshore where it has been moored.”

The spokesman said it was due to arrive at the Port of Sunderland today for repair work before continuing its journey.
