Caring Joyce is up for national award

AMAZING ... Palmersdene care worker Joyce Edwards with her Great British Care Award.

CO-WORKERS of humble Joyce Edwards say she doesn’t realise just how good she is at her job.

But now, she’s been awarded The Care Home Care Worker Award for the North East region.

Mrs Edwards, of John Williamson Street, South Shields, began working as a carer four years ago.

The 52-year-old was presented with the Great British Care Award, in a ceremony at the Hilton hotel in Gateshead.

The honour will see her go to the national finals of the awards, which celebrate all different types of carers, in London next year.

The mum-of-two, a care assistant at Palmersdene in Grange Road West, Jarrow, said: “I was over the moon and felt really proud.”

Mrs Edwards, and others nominated for the prize, were interviewed by the awards’ organisers before a winner was chosen.

The winner was announced at the event on November 24, and Mrs Edwards was presented with her award by This Morning presenter Alison Hammond.

She said: “I really didn’t expect to win because I’ve only been doing the job for four years and there was people there who have been doing it for a lot longer and have more experience than me.

“I was quite honoured. It’s nice to be recognised like this for the job that I do.”

Palmersdene manager Maureen Patterson, said: “Joyce is very humble, she is not aware of how good she actually is.

“She is loved by the people she cares for and is a very valued and respected member of our team.”
