Carnival fever hits Jarrow at centre's fun day

Carnival time at Hedworthfield CA, Jarrow, with costumes designed by Creative Seed.

Hundreds of people of all ages descended on Hedworthfield CA in Cornhill on Saturday to take part in its annual fun day.

The event marked the start of the 10-day long Jarrow Festival which will see activities and sessions taking place throughout the town’s community centres and churches.

At the carnival visitors were treated to a range of stalls, fairground rides and demonstrations by groups based at the centre.

Cookery, balloon modelling and crafts were also available for people of all ages to try their hand at.

The event also featured a parade by community groups from across South Tyneside who were brought together by production company the Creative Seed.

The community interest company is run by choreographer Garner Harris and his wife, costume designer Sandy, who aim to bring the sights and sounds of carnival fever to festivals and events.

The event was supported by HCA Radio and also featured a range of animals for youngsters to get up close to.

Garner said: “It was an excellent day and we had a really big crowd.

“It was a lot bigger than last year and everyone enjoyed themselves.

“The whole day was a great success from start to finish.”

The event was attended by the Mayor and Mayoress of South Tyneside Councillors Alan and Moira Smith.
