Celebrating troops' return

TOMORROW'S welcome home parade, in honour of Sgt Borthwick, Bdr Smith, Lance Bombardier Gary Routledge, Gunner Philip Bradley and Captain Steve Phillips, officially marks the homecoming of the borough's TA soldiers.

The event begins at noon in Broughton Road, South Shields, and will be followed by a march to South Shields Town Hall, led by the pipes and drums of 101 Regiment.

At the Town Hall, the Mayor of South Tyneside, Coun John Anglin, will inspect the troops before the 205 Battery flag is lowered from the flagpole where it has flown since the soldiers went to Afghanistan in April.

The flag will then be handed over to Battery commander Major Peter Winton.

The event will let people remember those killed in other conflicts, including Bosnia, Kosovo, Sierra Leone, Northern Ireland and Iraq.
