Centenary match is a big success
A REMATCH between two teams to mark 100 years of schools football saw South Tyneside emerge victorious.
South Tyneside under-15s took on North Tyneside under-15s for the Ingham Infirmary Shield in a hard-fought game at Cleadon Recreation Ground, South Shields, on Saturday.
South Tyneside took the lead, but North Tyneside equalised, forcing the game to penalties and sudden death, which South Tyneside won.
The Mayor of South Tyneside, Coun Alex Donaldson, who kicked off the match, said: "I was impressed by the skill of both teams.
"The match itself was good to watch – it was end to end stuff, played in great spirit."
The game recreated the first South Shields Schools Football Association (FA) match, which took place on May 9, 1909.
The Ingham Infirmary Shield was competed for at the end of each season until 1971, when South Tyneside Schools FA was formed.
Former players, including those who were runners-up in the final of the English Schools Shield – the FA Cup of schoolboy football – in 1955/56, were invited to the game.
A reception was held afterwards in the Waterline suite at the Temple Park Centre in South Shields, where every youngster was presented with a commemorative trophy.
