Cheerleaders' world record attempt

HUNDREDS of youngsters descended on South Tyneside yesterday in a bid to become record-breaking cheerleaders.

More than 350 girls and one boy grabbed their pompoms and headed to Bents Park, in South Shields, hoping to be part of the world's biggest cheerleading routine.

Girls from South Tyneside schools such as Hebburn Comprehensive, St Joseph's RC Comprehensive, Boldon Comprehensive and Cleadon Village Primary practised solidly for the last three months to make sure their routines were perfect.

Organisers Kidz Get Fit were hoping The Great North Cheers 2008 would get them into the Guinness Book of Records, but they fell short of the 1,000 record.

But Bryner Ramsey, of Kidz Get Fit, was in buoyant mood today saying: "Yesterday was an absolutely wonderful day.

"Everyone who took part was fantastic, and some of the standard of the girls' dancing has been exceptional.

"It has made us even more focused on smashing the record next time."

The event also raised more than 1000 for Metro Radio and Magic 1152's

Cash for Kids, who help disabled and disadvantaged children in North East England.
