Children brush up on industry
SOUTH Tyneside children as young as 10 are being targeted for a career in industry.
A manufacturing initiative for primary school children is raising the profile of industry and getting them to consider their potential careers at an earlier stage in their development.
And 23 Year 6 pupils from Hedworthfield Primary School, in Jarrow, have been seeing at first-hand how manufacturing works in action with a series of field visits to local companies Cottam Brush and Alpha Windows, both Hebburn, and Harlow Printing, in South Shields.
The project is the brainchild of the South Tyneside Manufacturing Forum, which has been working with Blue Venture – the education business partnership for South Tyneside – to engage with local primary schools.
The initiative is broken down into four weekly sessions including an introduction to manufacturing, a challenge to plan, design, create and bulk manufacture different products, and visits to three local employers to see manufacturing in action.
Whitburn Village Primary, in Whitburn, Jarrow's Simonside Primary and Hedworthfield schools have all taken part.
The venture has involved about 90 pupils who are about to enter secondary education.
Blue Venture's Denis Heaney said: "This was a fantastic opportunity for youngsters to gain first-hand experience of day-to-day manufacturing operations for three different companies."
Blue Venture offers young people a taste of the real working world, and aims to give them the key business skills bosses look for.
