THE body of a man was found at the foot of cliffs in a bank holiday tragedy on South Shields’s coastline.
Police and Coast-guard officers were called to the Marsden Rock area at about 2pm today.
The grim discovery, to the south of the Marsden Grotto pub, was made while the beach to the north was busy with families enjoying the last bank holiday of the summer.
A jacket thought to belong to the man – believed to be a 21-year-old from South Shields – was found on the clifftop.
An investigation into the man’s death was launched by detectives and the South Tyneside Coroner has been informed.
A police spokesman confirmed the body was that of a man, and said there are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances surrounding his death.
