CLOSE SHAVE FOR HOSPICE

CHARITY champ Bernard Sewell endured a hair-raising experience to boost St Clare's Hospice, Jarrow.

Bernard, 41, of Ralph Street, Hebburn, decided to have his head shaved to boost the hospice as the first in a series of planned fundraising events.

"I let my hair grow for about nine weeks, to get it long enough to be cut off. I've always wanted to raise cash for St Clare's and thought this was the ideal way to raise some money.

"It only took about 20 minutes to cut all my hair off, and I don't think it looks as bad as I'd imagined!"

With the help of family, friends and fellow workers at Inshops in the Viking Shopping Centre, Jarrow, where Bernard works as a caretaker, he eventually raised 115 for the Jarrow hospice, which cares for people with life-threatening illnesses.

Bernard decided to to have his locks shorn at the Full Works hairdressing salon, in Coniston Avenue, Hebburn, because he knows some of the staff.

He said: "I've never raised cash for St Clare's before, but I have offered my services as a volunteer driver and just want to help it as much as I can throughout this year."

Bernard plans to get on his bike as the next stage of his fundraising efforts for St Clare's, during this year's Great North Bike Ride.

"Normally I cycle for three or four hours a week and I plan to raise more sponsorship money during the ride.

"I use a 24-speed mountain bike and will probably step up the mileage as it gets closer to the event," Bernard explained.

Enid Apsey, spokeswoman for St Clare's Hospice, thanked Bernard for his hair-raising efforts.
