Club sends troops some festive cheer

CHARITY champs are defying the credit crunch to bring Christmas cheer to our troops in Afghanistan.

Earlier this year, regulars at the Simonside Social Club in Winskell Road, South Shields, filled dozens of boxes with goodies for our servicemen and women serving in the war-torn country.

Now the exercise is being repeated to ensure troops enjoy a little Christmas cheer.

And despite growing economic gloom in the UK, the response the second time around has been even better.

Campaign organiser Tony Brown has once more teamed up with the Support Our Soldiers (SOS) charity to transport the boxes overseas.

Donations can be dropped off at both the social club and Tesco supermarket in Newcastle Road, Low Simonside.

Mr Brown said: "I can't believe the generosity of the people.

"The credit crunch is making no difference at all.

"In fact we have had an even better response this time around."

Suggested parcel fillers include Santa hats, selection boxes, Christmas puddings, sweets, chewing gum, underwear, socks and nuts and raisins.

All the items must be able to fit into a standard shoe box.

Among the goods that cannot be sent are aerosols, alcohol, Christmas crackers, lighters or matches.

The collection will continue until November 7, and the organisers once more have the support of Keith Mensforth, the club secretary.

Mr Brown said: "Keith and his wife have backed us all the way.

"This is an opportunity for us to show our gratitude to the sacrifices being made by our troops abroad and to bring them a little Christmas cheer.

"Despite the hard economic times at home, I am glad to see that people are responding magnificently."
