Coast trek will boost Sir Bobby's charity

THE memory of footballing legend Sir Bobby Robson will shine when a fundraising trek is staged in South Shields later this month.

The town's four-mile Coastal Walk is this year being staged in aid of the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation.

The leisurely walk starts at the Sand Dancer bar on the seafront and takes in the coastal route to the Marsden Inn, before heading back to the New Crown pub.

Sir Bobby fought cancer five times, and 17 years after his first diagnosis, he lost his battle with the disease on July 31 last year.

He died at his County Durham home with his wife and family beside him.

During the last 18 months of his life, and after retiring from football management, Sir Bobby worked hard towards fighting cancer through his charity.

The Sir Bobby Robson Foundation focuses on the early detection and treatment of cancer and the clinical trials of new drugs that will eventually beat it.

Last year, the Sir Bobby Robson Cancer Trials Research Centre opened at Newcastle's Freeman Hospital.

Anyone wishing to take part is asked to meet outside the Sand Dancer at 11.30am on Sunday, March 28.

Fruit and light refreshments will be available at the halfway point.
