Collections begin for garden waste

COLLECTION dates for garden waste are changing in South Tyneside.

From this week, fortnightly collections of green bins have started again, but might not be collected on the same day as the other bins.

Calendars have already started to be posted through residents’ letterboxes to inform them of the new dates.

Coun Tracey Dixon, lead member for area management and community safety on South Tyneside Council, said: “The changes are being made to the way we carry out garden waste collections to make sure we are using cost-effective routes.”

The following items can be put in the bin: Grass cuttings, hedge trimmings, small twigs, cut flowers, houseplants, weeds and windfalls.

But kitchen and food waste, stones and loose soil, flowerpots and seed trays, metals, glass and paper, plastic, packaging and plastic bags are not allowed.

Residents can enter their postcode at www.southtyneside.info/recycle to check dates for their own bins.
