Council leader loses his seat

THE Labour leader of South Tyneside Council lost his seat to the Independent candidate in the biggest result of the night.

Paul Waggott lost to Geraldine White, a former Labour councillor, following a close fight in the Fellgate and Hedworth ward.

Coun White said: "This is a big leap forward for the Independents in South Tyneside."

A shaken Mr Waggott, who has been council leader for 11 years, said: "I think the national situation may have affected the result, but I'm sure South Tyneside Council will continue to prosper."

Full result:

Ian Armstrong (Con) - 209

Paul Waggott (Lab) - 1,090

Geraldine White (Ind) - 1,212

Turnout: 41.5 per cent.
