Councillor faces assault allegation
A SOUTH Tyneside councillor is due to be spoken to by police over an allegation of assault.
Beacon and Bents ward councillor Ahmed Khan is alleged to have attacked a 29-year-old man at the launch of the Cultures Together festival yesterday afternoon.
His alleged victim, a prominent member of the Bangladeshi community, is said to have been uninjured after the altercation on the steps of South Shields Town Hall in front of shocked onlookers.
A complaint over the alleged assault was made to police last night and it is understood that businessman Coun Khan, the deputy leader of the council's Independent Alliance group, will be spoken to by officers.
A police spokeswoman said: The 29-year-old victim was approached by a man and suffered a minor assault. However, he was not injured.
"Inquiries into the incident are continuing and police are appealing for witnesses to come forward."
The Cultures Together festival is an event aimed at celebrating and bringing together people from the the diverse range of cultures within South Tyneside.
Yesterday's launch was to promote the event which is to be held in Bents Park on August 9, and involves music and dance, as well as stalls and information about varied groups taking part.
The Gazette was at the town hall carrying out a photodshoot to promote the event when the alleged assault took place.
