Crackdown at estate troublespots

TROUBLEMAKERS are being targeted in a crackdown on anti-social behaviour in a part of South Tyneside.

Members of the council's anti-social team have joined forces with police to launch high-visibility patrols in hotspot areas of Harton Moor, Cleadon Park, Horsley Hill, and Marsden.

Supported by local authority community wardens, they aim to let residents know how they can report bad behaviour on their estates, as well as send a message to troublemakers that they are not welcome.

Flyers are also being delivered to homes, letting people know officers had been in the area.

Coun Joanne Bell, innovation and lead member for safer and stronger communities, said: "High-visibility patrols such as these are extremely effective in providing reassurance to local people and reducing the fear of crime.

"They also serve as a reminder that we will not tolerate anti-social behaviour, and we are here to help anybody whose quality of life is suffering as a result."

The joint patrols are part of the ongoing Safer South Tyneside campaign with officers working outside their normal hours.

Neighbourhood Inspector Simon Charlton, said: "By working together it is sending a message out to residents that we are right behind you, while telling those who commit crime and anti-social behaviour, they are not welcome.

"Already the partnership approach is working, with more residents coming forward with information which has enabled us to execute more warrants on properties, where in the past we had no information for, making more arrests and recovering drugs.

"It is brilliant, and from now on things can only get

better."

To report anti-social behaviour, including nuisance neighbours, alcohol misuse, youth disorder and mini-motos, text ASB and your message to 07786 200 802 or call 424 7999; or in an emergency call 999.

Problems can also be reported by completing an online form at www.southtyneside.info/asb or e-mail: asb@southtyneside.gov.uk.
