Cut fuel prices now Gordon Brown - Web Vote Result

PRIME Minister Gordon Brown must drop plans to add a 2p tax levy on the price of petrol - due to be introduced in the autumn - according to the results of our latest online poll.

Rocketing fuel prices are starting to bite now more than ever - with a litre of unleaded petrol fast approaching the 1.20 mark and diesel prices, in some places, rising to 1.30 a litre.

The Government says its powerless to stop the rises because it's the oil companies, not ministers, that set prices. But drivers filling up at UK pumps pay the highest rate of tax duty on fuel in Europe.

South Tyneside business leaders today added their voices to the protests over fuel prices.

One leading businessman told the gazette he feared firms would go to the wall if petrol prices continued to rise.

Our poll asked:

Will the soaring price of fuel force the Government to rethink plans for an extra 2p levy on petrol, to be introduced in the autumn?

The result was:

Yes: 90 per cent

No: 10 per cent
