Cyclist enjoys a family brake
A HEBBURN cycling hero made tracks for home during a marathon charity effort.
Gavin Griffiths called in to see his family in South Tyneside while taking part in a 1,100-mile trek from John O'Groats to Lands End.
Mr Griffiths, 31, who now lives in Hertfordshire, was accompanied by London cycling companion, 40-year-old Danny Scollard.
Both men are hoping to raise more than 1,000 for Macmillan Nurses, who provide care for cancer patients, by cycling from one end of the UK to another, including their South Tyneside detour.
Mr Griffiths paid a visit to his father, Ray Griffiths, 52, in Auckland Road, Hebburn, and also met his son, Connor Griffiths, 13, a pupil at Hebburn Comprehensive School.
The cycling duo set off from John O'Groats on Sunday, July 11, and are hoping to reach Lands End on Saturday.
Mr Griffiths snr said: "We are really proud of Gavin and Danny for what they are doing.
"Gavin's grandmother, Margaret, died of cancer about 15 years ago.
"They found the Scottish Highlands very tough, and Gavin has had a puncture and a buckled wheel along the way – but he managed to get help.
"Gavin enjoyed meeting his son, Connor, who lives in Hebburn, and my partner, Christine. He also went to Houghton-le-Spring to see his mother, Lorraine.
"They came down from Scotland and took a route through Cumbria, before crossing the country to South Tyneside, so they have probably cycled far more than the usual route.
