Dad and daughter going on the Run
A DAD and daughter are going on the run – to raise money for charity.
When Dianne Coser was diagnosed with diabetes four years ago, her life changed, and she now lives under 24-hour care at Stapleton House, Jarrow.
Now her son, Lee Anderson, and his seven-year-old daughter, Emily, are taking part in the Great North Run to raise funds for Diabetes UK.
Mr Anderson, 28, will tackle the Newcastle-South Shields half-marathon on Sunday, September 19, while Emily will take part in the one-mile mini-run on Newcastle's Quayside 24 hours earlier.
He said: "My mum had a fall in an accident four years ago, which caused her to have a stroke.
"This resulted in her being positively tested for diabetes, which doctors then established was the actual cause of the fall in the first place.
"My mum now has memory loss, which requires 24-hour care.
"I hope that people will become aware to get checked for diabetes quicker because, if people did so, then they would not result in cases like my mum.
"I am worried about my daughter becoming diabetic, as diabetes can be hereditary. My grandad had it, now my mum has it.
"Emily is really excited about the run, and cannot wait to start training. She's already getting a lot of sponsorship coming in from her friends.
"We are trying to raise 350 for Diabetes UK, and I have about half of that amount so far.
"I am hoping that this article may attract more sponsors to raise the remainder."
Diabetes in the UK is on the increase. In 1996, 1.4million people suffered from the condition but now the total is 2.6million.
