Dance kids have all the right moves

MORE than 30 schools showed off their dancing skills at an annual event.

Hundreds of youngsters aged five to 16 from primary, secondary and special schools across the borough were involved in this year's South Tyneside Schools' Dance Festival.

Some youngsters were so keen to take part in the event they even went back to school despite having already left Year 11.

Festival co-ordinator Marilyn Laverick said: "It was a fantastic week.

"We put on five evenings and one matinee performance, and they were packed out.

"The dancing was of an incredibly high standard and everyone did so well.

"The parents were so proud and really supportive of what their children were doing.

"There were some very modern dances, no doubt inspired by George Sampson, Diversity and Flawless from Britain's Got Talent.

"We saw hip hop, cheerleading, street dancing and breakdancing. It was great to see so many boys taking part too.

"In the past, it might as well have been called the girls' dance festival, but it's different now.

"The lads are so enthusiastic, and it's wonderful to see them take part."

The South Tyneside Schools' Dance Festival has been held at the Customs House for 14 years and for more than three decades altogether.

"Before the Customs House, we used to tour all the secondary schools," added Ms Laverick.

"The Customs House, with the professional stage and dressing rooms, makes it so much more of an experience for the dancers.

"We are so grateful to the Customs House staff. They are so friendly and supportive."
