DJ's Eurovision fundraising night

A DJ has organised a special Eurovision night to raise money for a cash-strapped hospital radio station.

Padraic Devlin has only been volunteering for Hospital Radio South Tyneside (HRST) for a few months, but the 31-year-old is already organising events to give the station a much-needed boost.

And on the eve of one of the year's biggest music events – tomorrow's Eurovision Song Contest – Mr Devlin is inviting South Tynesiders to go along to a Euro-themed charity event at the Hospital Social Club tonight.

It will include scores of Eurovision hits, old and new, a music quiz, bingo and a raffle.

Mr Devlin, from South Shields, said: "I thought it would be a good idea to have a Eurovision-themed night when the competition is just round the corner.

"Everyone who works for the station is a volunteer, and we need money to buy equipment so we can keep doing what we do and entertaining the hospital patients.

"So I hope we get lots of people coming along to have a great night, and raise a bit of cash for the station."

Despite the station being run by volunteers, who have had no professional media training, the station is the second most popular choice for patients, and it trounces the nationals in its ratings.

An official charity, its main aim is an entertainment and information service, it is financed entirely through fundraising.

Last year, fellow volunteer Craig Simpson celebrated the station's 51st birthday with a marathon 51-hour show.

All the shows are aired from the station's small room hidden away in a corridor of South Tyneside District Hospital.

The night starts at 7pm and entry is free. All are welcome.
