Driver found dead at the bottom of cliffs.

A MAN has been found dead in a car discovered at the bottom of cliffs in South Tyneside.

Emergency services were scrambled at just after 10am today after reports of a vehicle in the water at Marsden, near to the Grotto pub.

Police, firefighters, paramedics and a team from the RNLI attended.

The driver of the car - believed to be a man earlier reported as missing in South Shields - was found dead.

A part of the beach was closed off while investigations were carried out.

A report is now being prepared for the coroner.

A spokeswoman for Northumbria Police said: “Police received a report that a car had gone over the cliffs at just after 10am, today.

“Emergency services were sent to the scene where the driver of the car was found dead. It is believed to be linked to an earlier report of a missing person from South Shields.

“Officers have informed the next of kin and are providing support to them at this time.

“There is not believed to be any third party involvement.

“A report is being prepared for the coroner.”
