Eco event attracts 5,000 visitors
AN eco-event has been hailed a huge success after attracting more than 5,000 green-conscious visitors.
People were able to find out more about reducing their carbon footprint at the Enviro Fayre in Bents Park, South Shields, last weekend.
Experts from more than 50 environmental organisations were on hand to talk to visitors about the effects of climate change, renewable energy and how to save resources.
They also enjoyed activities and giveaways, including free bike health checks, low-energy light bulbs, seeds and compost vouchers.
Entertainment was also organised for youngsters, such as face painting and competitions, farm animals, a magician, a circus skills workshop, a craft marquee and bird box making.
Lucy Siegle, a reporter on the BBC's The One Show, officially opened this year's event alongside the Mayor of South Tyneside, Coun Alex Donaldson.
The Mayor said: "I was delighted to welcome Lucy to South Tyneside to open the Enviro Fayre.
"It was a huge success. Last year's event attracted about 1,500 people, so we are really pleased with this year's turnout of more than 5,000 visitors.
"It was a great day for the whole family to enjoy, and the perfect opportunity for us to raise awareness of environmental issues and promote positive action in a one-stop-shop.
"Everyone can do something to reduce their carbon footprint and help tackle climate change, whether it is recycling or saving energy.
"I'm sure all those who attended the event will have taken away some ideas about how they can do their bit for the environment, and help to make a difference."
Among the organisations represented were the Energy Saving Trust, which set up a Smarter Driving Simulator.
It showed drivers how simple changes to their driving could improve their car's fuel efficiency, such as changing gear at the best time, and driving at an efficient speed.
Staff also gave advice on how people can make their home more efficient, as well as create their own renewable energy.
There were also stalls selling Fair Trade and organic products, water butts, composters and goods from the Recycling Village's BEST (Bettering the Environment in South Tyneside) Shop.
The Enviro Fayre was organised by South Tyneside Council and the BEST Group, in association with sponsors Groundwork South Tyneside and Newcastle, Keeping Newcastle Warm, Scottish and Southern Energy and Unison.
